You're missing an important point, Matt -- Pearl Harbor.
Yes, the U.S. public did not want to go to war against Hitler, but Pearl Harbor changed that. It was the reason Roosevelt left the fleet in Pearl Harbor when he could've had it move out. The U.S. had broken the code the Japanese used for their communications systems and we knew they were preparing to attack 24 hours before it occurred. Roosevelt had met with Churchill who begged him to help the British and warned that Germany might overrun England if the U.S. did not join the war effort. Pearl Harbor was necessary to enlist U.S. public opinion in the war effort.
It's why they called 9-11, the New Pearl Harbor, because it too was "arranged" by our government to gain public support for a war against Sadam Hussein and Al-Qaeda.
