Mike, I was with you until you said that JFK planned Vietnam. I have read a good bit on that topic. In fact, that was one of the major reasons he was assassinated because he wanted to withdraw from Vietnam. Read the book by Fletcher Prouty, JFK: The CIA, Vietnam, and the Plot of Assassinate John F. Kennedy. Prouty spent time in Vietnam as a CIA officer during the Ike Administration, then went to the Pentagon as a Military Intelligence Officer during the Kennedy years. He actually wrote the memo NSAM-263 that called for the withdrawal from Vietnam issued by JFK that was reversed by LBJ four days after the assassination. Another good book about JFK change in foreign policy and his desire to end the Cold War is JFK and the Unspeakable by James Douglass. I've read scads of books about the assassination. It is the horror story of our generation. It was so much worse, though we didn't realize it at the time, than probably what is going to happen now with Trump as President. But we shall see about that, won't we?
